Physiotherapy with 9 hand and fingers functional exercises to decrease hand edema

9 hand and fingers functional exercises to decrease hand edema

Any arm illnesses and injuries that include either shoulder or elbow or wrist or fingers or bones or muscles with, for example, cancer, trauma, fracture, carpal tunnel syndrome, est. It has the potential to develop hand edema.

“Edema is glue”.

Edema effects on joint range of motion, soft tissue mobility, quality of scar tissue formation, function, strength, and esthetics of the hand. Prolonged hand edema can have detrimental effects on range of motion and function that cause delay a patient’s recovery, return to work and resumption of activities of daily living and require many outpatient appointments.

“The prevention and treatment of edema are of paramount importance during all phases of management of the injured hand.”

The aim of physiotherapy in edema management is to reduce edema as effectively and quickly as fast as possible with focus on more functional related goals. There is no consensus on how best to manage edema.

The therapeutic exercise to decrease edema is one of the most common methods of physiotherapists which we will demonstrate in this article. Moreover, physiotherapists have more than one option to treat edema that can be mixed for the best outcomes.

Manual edema mobilization (MEM) is a method of edema reduction based on the lymphatic system’s ability to drain and resolve subacute edema. It was introduced in 1995 as a method to reduce subacute and chronic hand and arm edema, has been adapted from the principles of manual lymph drainage (MLD) which is used to treat postcancer lymphedema. Therefore, MEM is an external force method of edema reduction to drain and solve post - acute edema.

There are many options in MEM, including, lymphatic drainage massage, light compression with elastic bandage, Coban, or Lycra gloves, and kinesio tape. They look like physiotherapy traditional edema treatment that should work with elevation above heart height. Their coordination is effective in reducing edema because elevation permits gravity to assist with the drainage of edema from the distal limb and MEMs expatriate the fluid from distal to proximal direction. By the way, They were instructed to do at least 10 minutes.

One essential part of physiotherapy in edema treatment is functional exercise. Functional exercise is active exercises which enable muscle contractions and tendon gliding that provide the pumping mechanism. The pumping action will assist with the flow of edema away from the distal.  Exercises can be completed in conjunction with other techniques to maximize the benefit; however, the patients’ hand movements are restricted based on healing timeframes.  In the case of immobilization or the restricted movement phase can have a detrimental effect on edema control, therefore, skipping exercises and selecting other options to control edema is the best way.
